What is a green screen studio?

A green screen studio is a specialised production environment that uses a green screen background, which can later be replaced with anything the imagination can think of!

Used in film, advertising, photography and television, green screen technology involves using a large green backdrop during filming, which is later replaced with a different background or scene in post-production through a process called chroma keying. With the use of chroma key software, the green screen is transformed into a transparent background. This is because the green colour is easily distinguishable, allowing software to remove it and replace it with the desired background, making it look like the actors or subjects were filmed in the new environment.

How does a green screen work?

A green screen works with an interesting technique called chroma keying. For the chroma key process to work properly, a green screen studio must be flat and uniform, which involves careful illumination of the surface, too.

Once that’s covered, the actors or subjects can perform their scenes in front of the green screen. There should be no shadows or other inconsistencies on the green screen footage for the chroma keying to be fully effective.

When the green screen video or photography is captured, it’s time for post-production! During this phase, special green screen software is used to identify the specific green colour (chroma) in the footage. The colour is then removed, leaving the subjects without a background at all. It is then up to you to add whatever background and visual effects you want, and voila! Success.

Why is a green screen green?

Green is the chosen colour because it’s not a common hue in human skin tones, making it easier for post-production gurus to work their magic. Sometimes certain toned blue screens are used instead, but blue presents certain problems. For one, blue is more common in clothing than bright green. In addition, the cameras and sensors used these days are more sensitive to green light, making it easier to capture clean green screen footage. Lastly, a green background is easier to differentiate from the subject than a blue screen. All in all, green screens work best, though blue is also an option!

How big should a green screen studio be?

To make use of the green screen effect, you don’t need a huge space. Of course, the size of a green screen studio you need will depend on your specific needs and the types of shots required. Generally, a green screen studio should be large enough to accommodate the subjects or actors, any necessary equipment, and provide some space for camera movement and lighting setup.

Our chroma key studio is 5.9 meters in width, 8 meters in length, and 4.3 meters in height, an ideal size for most needs.

Can we paint the green screen another colour?

Unfortunately not – our green screen always has and always will be green! However, if you need a coved studio in a specific colour, our white cove studio can be painted any colour – and was in fact recently turned into a green screen!

Do you have blackout options?

Yes, our green screen studio has no natural light and is blackout as standard.
